Women’s underrepresentation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields constitutes a serious concern in our society. Contrary to what is expected, the tech sector still has an issue with gender diversity - Women’s lack of participation within the tech sector is continuously growing. More precisely, half of young women who go into tech drop out by the age of 35. A study conducted from the European Commission has in fact revealed that the number of men with ICT-related studies is four times higher than the number of women.
What is even more concerning is the fact that only 21% of women in 2021 believe the technology industry is a place they could thrive.
Equality and inclusion are key values for WMF. For this reason, every year the Festival shines a spotlight on inspiring stories that emphasise the importance of diversity within the workplace.
WMF aims to build a more inclusive tech industry and highlight female contribution to the development of technology and innovation. This is why every year WMF hosts many talented female speakers that apply to the call for ‘Women in Tech’.
Among the successful speakers that brought their skills and knowledge to the Festival in past editions, to stimulate the audience’s ambition and imagination sharing their talents and successful stories, WMF hosted - IBM AI Ethics Global Leader Francesca Rossi, system operations engineer Chiara Cocchiara, computer scientist Melanie Rieback, Senior Scientist at Fermilab Anna Grassellino, IIT researcher Alessandra Sciutti and young Luisa Rizzo, champion of drone racing.2021 call for Women in Tech is officially closed.
